Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis
Why TANITA’s Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) Technology Stands Out
Unmatched Precision and Clinical Accuracy
TANITA’s BIA technology is designed to deliver the highest level of accuracy and reliability. The proprietary prediction equations integrated into TANITA’s software were developed by renowned body composition expert Professor Steven Heymsfield and his research team at Columbia University, New York. Extensive independent studies confirm that precise body composition analysis requires multiple parameters—such as age, gender, height, and weight—to ensure accurate results.
The Trusted Choice of Experts Worldwide
TANITA’s BIA technology has undergone more extensive validation against other body composition assessment methods than any other brand. Its accuracy has been recognized in numerous peer-reviewed international medical journals, and TANITA monitors are widely used in independent research studies globally. With the guidance of the TANITA Medical Advisory Board, the brand continues to lead advancements in BIA technology, reinforcing its reputation as the gold standard in body composition analysis.
Pioneering Research for Better Health and Performance
Committed to continuous innovation, TANITA actively supports cutting-edge research in key health areas, including childhood obesity, sports performance optimization, and age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia). By collaborating with healthcare and fitness professionals, TANITA develops tools and technologies that enhance health monitoring and improve quality of life.
Precision Weighing for Reliable Measurements
Accurate weight measurement is a fundamental factor in precise body composition analysis. TANITA’s professional and home-use models feature highly sophisticated weighing mechanisms, ensuring repeatable and consistent readings. All medically approved TANITA monitors hold prestigious certifications, including NAWI Certification, MDD Class IIa, FDA, and CE approvals, guaranteeing compliance with the highest global standards.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE TO OUR PATIENTS’ LIVES THANKS TO USING THE BEST TECHNOLOGY
‘As a Medical Advisory Board member, I have consulted with and learned from TANITA engineers for over 20 years as they developed early prototypes that have now blossomed into advanced bioimpedance technologies that accurately quantify body composition. These developments are timely as a critical need exists to go beyond simple but inaccurate measures of body shape and composition (e.g., body mass index) when evaluating people with obesity, sarcopenia, and other chronic medical conditions and diseases.’

Levels of Accuracy
How does BIA technology work?
Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) is a scientifically proven method for estimating body composition. TANITA’s advanced BIA technology is integrated into all its body composition monitors, ensuring accurate and reliable assessments.
When you step onto a TANITA monitor, a low-level, completely safe electrical signal is transmitted through the body via four metal electrodes. This signal moves efficiently through hydrated muscle tissue, which contains high water content, but encounters resistance (impedance) when passing through fat tissue.
In full-body models, the signal travels through the feet, legs, and abdomen, providing a complete body composition analysis. Segmental models utilize additional hand-held electrodes, allowing for a detailed breakdown of body composition across the arms, legs, and abdominal region.
TANITA’s scientifically validated equations use the measured impedance to determine body composition metrics in less than 20 seconds, delivering quick and precise results for professionals and individuals alike.
Multi frequency BIA technology
TANITA’s Multi-Frequency Body Composition Monitors utilize three or six different frequencies to measure bioelectrical impedance, delivering a higher level of accuracy compared to single and dual-frequency devices.
Lower-frequency signals assess impedance outside the cell membrane, while higher frequencies penetrate the cell membrane, allowing for a more detailed analysis of body composition. By leveraging multiple frequencies, TANITA monitors can accurately estimate Intracellular Water (ICW), Extracellular Water (ECW), and Total Body Water (TBW).
This advanced measurement capability is crucial for evaluating an individual’s hydration status, detecting potential health risks such as dehydration or oedema, and providing valuable insights for both healthcare and fitness professionals.
Dual frequency BIA technology
TANITA’s body composition monitors equipped with Advanced Dual Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) Technology utilize two distinct frequencies to assess body composition with greater precision. By incorporating multiple frequencies, these monitors provide highly accurate measurements, ensuring reliable data for health and fitness professionals as well as individuals monitoring their wellness.

Introducing the TANITA 4-Compartment measurement
TANITA remains at the forefront of body composition assessment, delivering highly precise measurements of fat, lean mass (muscle), and bone mineral density. With the introduction of 4C Monitoring, we take accuracy even further, offering a comprehensive 4-Compartment analysis.
This innovative 4C method provides a detailed breakdown of body fat, protein, bone mineral mass, and total body water, allowing for a more in-depth evaluation of overall body composition.
What is the 4-Compartment (4C) model?
The 4-Compartment (4C) Model provides a highly precise breakdown of body weight into fat, water, minerals, and protein, utilizing gold standard measurement techniques for each component.
This method incorporates the assessment of body mass (weight), total body volume (air displacement), total body water (D₂O dilution), and bone mineral content (DXA scan). Due to the need for specialized laboratory equipment, access to the 4C method is often limited for many clinicians and researchers.
Level of precision with the 4C¹ method
- Body fat 97%
- Lean mass 98%
- Muscle mass 98%
- Total body water 98%
